‘The Master and Margarita’ is a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov written between 1928 and 1940 which wasn’t published until 1967. It is woven around a visit by the Devil to the fervently atheistic Soviet Union; it is angled against a suffocatingly bureaucratic social order. Emma’s costumes were inspired by ‘The Devil’s Ball’ in the story, her aim was to bring the good Margarita, and the Devil with his two underworld wenches to life.

It was an exciting process of bounce ideas off another, trying things out and make decisions based on our discoveries. The collaboration was aimed at realising the custom made bodysuits for the underworld wenches characters. The dancers had to be able to move effortlessly on stage; centipede like geometric fabric spins and anatomically engineered artwork created visually rich skins that worked as the dancers moved on stage.
